Dental Fillings

Fillings are restorations that repair teeth damaged by cavities. There are different types of dental fillings such as tooth colored restorations (composites) or silver restorations (amalgams). Our choice of materials for each patient depends on location and position of the teeth needing treatment.

Composite Fillings:

Made of tooth colored materials, composites restore the natural beauty of teeth. They can be matched very closely to your natural tooth color and are virtually indistinguishable from non-restored teeth. Composite fillings are ideal for front teeth and may be selected for sites on premolars and molars as well.

Amalgam Fillings:

Amalgams are frequently recommended for premolars and molars. Silver fillings are known for their strength and durability.

Crowns

A crown is a restoration that covers a tooth in order to strengthen it as well as restore its normal shape and size. A crown may be placed to restore fractured or cracked teeth, prevent weak teeth from breaking, support large fillings when little tooth structure remains, or to attach a bridge. A posterior tooth that has been treated with a root canal requires a crown to provide strength and support for the tooth.

In today’s dentistry there are numerous types of crowns available to the patient including gold crowns, porcelain fused to high noble metal and all porcelain crowns.

 

Bridges

A fixed bridge is used to replace missing teeth. These restorations bridge the gap by crowning teeth on either side of the space. Bridges help maintain a normal bite, prevent stress on the dental arches, prevent drifting and tilting of adjacent teeth, inhibit decay in difficult areas and slow the onset of periodontal disease.

 

Implants

 

Dental implants replace teeth that have been lost due to trauma, decay, gum disease, infection or congenital defects. Implants look, feel and function just like natural teeth. With implants, patients can esthetically replace teeth in a permanent way that is highly predictable. Implants can also be used to help avoid the movement and irritation of dentures. A highly trained periodontist or oral surgeon recommended by our office will surgically place the implant. After the implant has fused to the bone, we will complete the process by attaching a natural and functional crown to the implant. This will once again provide you with the comforts and confidence that accompanies a beautiful smile.

 

Complete and Partial Dentures

A denture is a removable replacement for missing teeth. A complete denture replaces all of the teeth while a partial denture fills in the missing teeth and prevents the remaining teeth from drifting into the open spaces. A denture can be “immediate” or “conventional”. An immediate denture is placed immediately following the extraction of the natural teeth. A conventional denture is a replacement for an existing denture. Partial and full dentures may consist of a metal or all acrylic framework and teeth. Implants can also be placed to help enhance the stability of these removable appliances.
